Job Title: Executive Director
Organization: Rhode Island Recreation and Park Association (RIRPA)
Position Type: One-Year Contract (Contractual Position)
Position Summary
The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of RIRPA and is responsible for providing leadership, administrative, and managerial services for the Association and its members. Reporting directly to the RIRPA board, this role ensures continuity in our programs, serves as the Association’s spokesperson, and advocates for the parks and recreation profession.
Key Responsibilities
Budget & Finance
- Assist in preparing the Association budget by providing relevant information, insight, and recommendations.
- Monitor the annual budget in coordination with the Treasurer and manage income and expense transactions.
- Research and coordinate fundraising opportunities through grants, sponsorships, public/private partnerships.
- Evaluate and recommend appropriate fees and charges.
Communications
- Develop and maintain an up-to-date membership directory.
- Prepare articles, reports, documentation, and correspondence as needed.
- Maintain Association files and historical records.
- Serve as editor for the Association newsletter.
Management & Board Relations
- Communicate policies and procedures to officers, committees, and members.
- Assist committees in developing and achieving their goals.
- Support the President in fulfilling duties and responsibilities.
- Guide the implementation of the strategic plan and annual goals for the Association including
- Growing membership
- Expanding on events and programs
- Coordinate efforts to secure advertising, exhibitors, and sponsorships for conferences and training programs.
- Prepare and execute contracts related to Association activities.
- Create and distribute the monthly newsletter & other communications.
Membership Services
- Assist the membership chairperson with recruitment and retention efforts.
- Evaluate and recommend enhancements to membership services.
- Coordinate membership communications, maintain membership records, and ensure personal contact with members.
Association Representation & Advocacy
- Represent RIRPA at local, statewide, and national meetings as required.
- Work with government and community partners to advocate for the parks and recreation profession.
- Represent the Association on relevant councils and legislative committees.
Certification and Continuing Education
- Monitor and coordinate professional development and continuing education opportunities.
- Assist in planning, contracting, and scheduling seminars, workshops, and conferences.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in leisure, recreation, parks, business, or a related field preferred
- Experience: Minimum of five years of progressive experience in leadership roles. Experience in association management is preferred.
- Skills:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage budgets and secure funding.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Ability to work independently and maintain strong interpersonal relationships.
Working Conditions
- The Executive Director is expected to provide their own office equipment (telephone, computer, printer, etc.).
- Regular travel throughout Rhode Island and attendance at professional conferences and meetings is required.
Compensation & Contract Details
- Base Salary: Up to $15,000 per year based on qualifications and experience.
- Commission: 25% of revenue growth
- This is a one-year contractual position with the possibility of extension based on performance and Association needs.
